Everyday, a Different Picture

So often in the world, we hear phrases like "That's what's wrong with this world" or "Because people are terrible, that's why". We live in a world where terrible things happen, and it seems that it's human nature to be awful, or to see only the awful aspects of a situation. This is a picture that shows the beauty of the world, the goodness and altruism that exists in more people than evil does. If only evil existed, or was at least more prevalent than good, this situation never would've occurred, and no one could see the positive in it. This picture was taken during the Egyptian Revolution. In a region torn by war and inter-faith violence, those people who are Christian, are protecting those people who are Muslim, from those who may attack them during a ceremony of their faith. They are not simply "Christians" and "Muslims" labeled alien from one another, they are people who happen to be of different faiths, but do not allow any difference to separate them from each other. They choose to protect one another, out of goodness and empathy rather than blind hatred and ignorance. Goodness can exist anywhere, if only people choose it to be so.

While the picture makes me happier to be in this world, it also raises questions to me: Why would anyone choose evil and selfishness and over goodness? When people are capable of such incredible things, why is there evil in the world? I can't make heads or tails of an answer to either of these questions. I don't think anyone can. So it's important that we take a step back to see the good in a bad situation, and to remember to choose good as well. No one person can hold it all on their shoulders, no one person can change it all for the better. We have to take that one step back, and remember to rely on each other as well.

This picture is beautiful, and there are so many pictures of goodness out there, I only wish that all pictures were beautiful like this.

  1. Pictures like this remind me there is good in the world, too. But caring and interested and clever people like YOU show me even more that there is hope for us after all. XOXO
